HSSIB is an independent arm's length body, of the Department of Health and Social Care. Our purpose is to improve patient safety across healthcare through safety investigations.

We are recruiting two Safety Insights Analysts to work as part of a dynamic Investigations and Insights Team, to deliver investigations that drive improvements in patient safety across England. Reporting into the Head of Patient Safety Insights and working within multi-disciplinary teams, you would be responsible for the identification and analysis of patient safety issues in the healthcare system; propose potential investigations for HSSIB to investigate and present the evidence to a panel; engage with a wide range of stakeholders including patients, families, healthcare staff, providers, integrated care boards, and national organisations; use research methods to gather and analyse safety intelligence from a wide range of sources; undertake qualitative analysis of written information and interview data to identify safety themes, and apply safety science methods; contribute to HSSIB investigations reviewing and corroborating safety intelligence and contributing to the writing of investigation reports.

We are looking for candidates with a strong academic background, with demonstrable experience applying research methods. We manage complex, sensitive patient safety data and emotional resilience is essential. 

Main duties

As a Safety Insights Analyst, you will:

  • be responsible for the identification and analysis of patient safety issues in the healthcare system;
  • propose potential investigations for HSSIB to investigate and present the evidence to a panel;
  • engage directly with a wide range of stakeholders including patients, families, healthcare staff, providers, integrated care boards, regions and national organisations;
  • review feedback from public consultations and identify key themes;
  • use research methods to gather and analyse safety intelligence from a wide range of sources including literature reviews, incident reporting systems, prevention of future death reports, investigation reports, and interviewing stakeholders using semi-structured question sets;
  • undertake qualitative analysis of written information and interview data to identify safety themes,.
  • contribute to HSSIB investigations reviewing and corroborating safety intelligence and contributing to the writing of investigation reports.
  • be responsible for providing analysis, insights and influential commentary to key internal groups to support recommendations and decision making;
  • develop analytical frameworks and processes and advise on continuous improvement of HSSIB methodologies;
  • prepare performance planning reports for the senior leadership team;·demonstrate competencies relevant to the role level and be a role model for HSSIB’s values.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a Safety Insights Analyst, you will:

  • be responsible for the identification and analysis of patient safety issues in the healthcare system;
  • propose potential investigations for HSSIB to investigate and present the evidence to a panel;
  • engage directly with a wide range of stakeholders including patients, families, healthcare staff, providers, integrated care boards, regions and national organisations;
  • review feedback from public consultations and identify key themes;
  • use research methods to gather and analyse safety intelligence from a wide range of sources including literature reviews, incident reporting systems, prevention of future death reports, investigation reports, and interviewing stakeholders using semi-structured question sets;
  • undertake qualitative analysis of written information and interview data to identify safety themes, and apply safety science methods such as SEIPS, AcciMaps, thematic analysis;
  • contribute to HSSIB investigations reviewing and corroborating safety intelligence (e.g., analysing incident reporting systems and learning from investigations / quality improvement programmes), and contributing to the writing of investigation reports.
  • be responsible for providing analysis, insights and influential commentary to key internal groups to support recommendations and decision making;
  • develop analytical frameworks and processes and advise on continuous improvement of HSSIB methodologies;
  • prepare performance planning reports for the senior leadership team;
  • demonstrate competencies relevant to the role level and be a role model for HSSIB’s values.

Person specification

Qualifications:

  • Degree level qualification in relevant discipline e.g. safety science, healthcare, psychology, research methods

Experience:

  • Evidence of authorship of reports and / or publications
  • Demonstrable experience of engaging with a range of stakeholders
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering presentations
  • Demonstrable experience in the theory and application of research methods

Skills:

  • Analytical skills including the ability to assess qualitative and quantitative data from a wide range of sources and present this in a clear and concise way
  • Ability to identify risks, anticipate issues and create solutions and to resolve problems in relation to project or service delivery
